"He's hip." Arsenio Hall

"a major talent" The Bay Guardian

"leaves them laughing coast to coast" San Francisco Chronicle

from the San Francisco Examiner
(May 7, 1992):

"...By far the most accomplished and successful act was that of Derique..., the longtime Bay Area performer. [Derique] is no newcomer to electronics (his 1989 show at the Oakland Ensemble Theatre had a high-tech finale). . . . Turning his own limbs into a drum set or a harpsichord keyboard, [Derique] makes the technology disappear behind the 'interface' of his body. And his skill as a dancer and silent clown is such that this disappearing act doesn't leave the audience empty-handed. He 'plays himself,' and the resul—percussive, syncopated and dynamic—is exhilerating."

from The New York Times (July 18, 1987):

". . .It is undeniably the speediest of the many star turns in 'The Comedy of Errors,' playing these days at the Vivian Beaumont Theater. . .[Derique] has found himself carrying on something of a one-man hambone crusade in the attempt to refurbish its status. . . .According to Dr. Joseph Boskin, professor of history and Afro-American tudies at Boston University, [Derique's] efforts to revive hambone 'are representative of a growing movement in America to keep alive elements of black culture that have survived through the generations.'"
